Advanced Apple Watch Troubleshooting

Cellular and connectivity edge cases for Apple Watch beyond basic pairing — line eligibility, signal issues, Family Setup, notifications, and moving a line to a new Watch.

Already paired your Apple Watch? This guide covers the less common cellular and connectivity issues that come up after setup. For basic pairing steps (GPS-only vs. Cellular setup), see Connecting a Watch.

Cellular Line Not Showing as Eligible

Adding an Apple Watch as a companion line requires your specific Previ line to support Apple Watch cellular plans, which depends on the underlying carrier (T-Mobile or AT&T) and your rate plan.

  • Contact Previ support with your Apple Watch's model and your line's phone number to confirm your plan supports a companion/digital line.

  • Make sure your iPhone's carrier settings are current: Settings > General > About — install any pending Carrier Settings Update.

  • Restart both the iPhone and Watch, then reopen the Watch app > Cellular > Set Up Cellular and try again.

  • If the option still doesn't appear after confirming eligibility with Previ support, a manual provisioning step may be needed on the carrier side — this can take up to 24 hours once requested.

Apple Watch Showing "No Service" or Losing Signal on Its Own

A cellular Apple Watch keeps its own connection to the network separate from your iPhone, so the watch can lose signal even when your phone has full bars.

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode on the Watch. Swipe up on the watch face for Control Center, tap the airplane icon, wait 15 seconds, then tap it again to turn it off.

  2. Restart the Watch. Hold the side button until the power slider appears, slide to power off, then hold the side button again to turn it back on.

  3. Check Settings > Cellular on the Watch to confirm the plan still shows as active.

  4. Reset network settings on the Watch. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings — this doesn't erase content, but you'll need to rejoin saved Wi‑Fi networks.

  5. If the Watch has been out of iPhone range for a while (left at home while you're at work, for example), give it 5–10 minutes to reconnect to cellular before troubleshooting further.

  6. Still no signal after these steps? Contact Previ support with the Watch's line and your general location — there may be a provisioning or coverage issue on the carrier side.

Setting Up Family Setup (Watch Without an iPhone)

Family Setup lets someone use a cellular Apple Watch without owning an iPhone themselves — common for kids or family members. It requires an iPhone belonging to the account organizer to do the initial setup, and a cellular Apple Watch model.

  1. On the organizer's iPhone, open the Watch app, tap Family Setup, and follow the prompts.

  2. The Watch's cellular line still needs to be an eligible Previ line — contact Previ support first to confirm whether Family Setup lines are supported on your rate plan, since not every plan includes this.

  3. Location Sharing and Find My must be enabled on the organizer's iPhone for Family Setup to complete.

  4. If Family Setup fails partway through, restart the organizer's iPhone and the Watch, confirm both are on the latest iOS/watchOS versions, and try again.

Calls or Texts Not Reaching the Watch

  • Confirm the Watch has cellular service (see "No Service" above) or is connected to Wi‑Fi or within Bluetooth range of the iPhone.

  • On the iPhone, open Watch app > My Watch > Phone and confirm calls are set to ring on the Watch.

  • Check Do Not Disturb and Focus modes on both devices — an active Focus can silence notifications on the Watch even when the iPhone allows them.

  • As a last resort, unpair and re-pair the Watch — back it up first, since unpairing erases the Watch.

Apple Watch Not Switching Between Wi‑Fi, Cellular, and iPhone

The Watch automatically picks the best available connection, in this order: connected to the iPhone over Bluetooth, then Wi‑Fi, then cellular. If it seems stuck on one:

  • Confirm Wi‑Fi is on in the Watch's Control Center and that it recognizes known networks (Settings > Wi‑Fi on the Watch).

  • Toggle Airplane Mode on the Watch off and back on to force it to re-evaluate available connections.

  • Restart the Watch.

Moving a Cellular Line to a New or Replacement Apple Watch

  1. Unpair the old Watch first. iPhone Watch app > All Watches > tap the (i) next to the old Watch > Unpair Apple Watch. This automatically removes the cellular plan from the old Watch.

  2. Pair the new Watch following the normal pairing steps, then go to Cellular > Set Up Cellular to add the line to the new device.

  3. If the line doesn't transfer automatically, or the new Watch shows the plan as unavailable, contact Previ support to move it manually — this is common enough after a Watch upgrade and usually resolves within a few hours.

Still Stuck?

Message Previ Support right in the app, or call 801-437-0620.
