Getting a new phone? Here's how to bring your contacts, photos, messages, and apps over from your old one. Find your new device below.
Apple (iPhone)
Coming from Another iPhone
Turn on your new iPhone and place it near your old, unlocked iPhone.
Quick Start should appear automatically on the old phone — tap Continue.
Scan the animation on the new iPhone with the old one's camera when prompted.
Choose to transfer directly from the old iPhone, or restore from an iCloud/computer backup instead — see Backing Up My Device — Apple.
Keep both phones on Wi‑Fi and near each other, plugged into power, until the transfer finishes — this can take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours.
Coming from an Android Phone
On your old Android phone, install the Move to iOS app from the Play Store.
On your new iPhone, during setup choose Move Data from Android and follow the prompts to connect the two devices.
Select what to transfer (contacts, photos, messages history, and more) and let it complete before disconnecting.
Samsung
Samsung's Smart Switch transfers data from an old phone — Samsung, other Android, or iPhone — to a new Samsung phone.
Wireless Transfer
On the new Samsung phone, during setup (or later via Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device), open Smart Switch.
On the old phone, install the Smart Switch app if it isn't already there (Android) or use the transfer prompt (iPhone).
Follow the prompts to connect the two phones over Wi‑Fi and choose what to transfer.
Keep both phones nearby and on power until the transfer finishes — this can take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours depending on how much data you're moving.
Cable Transfer (Faster for Large Amounts of Data)
Use a USB-C-to-USB-C or Smart Switch cable to connect the two phones directly.
Open Smart Switch on the new phone and follow the prompts.
Coming from Another Android Phone
During setup on the new Pixel, choose Copy apps & data.
Connect the old phone using the included cable/adapter, or choose the wireless option if offered.
Follow the prompts to select what to bring over — apps, photos, contacts, messages, and settings.
Keep both phones nearby and on power until the transfer finishes — this can take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours depending on how much data you're moving.
Coming from an iPhone
During setup, choose to copy data from an iPhone when prompted, and connect it via cable if asked.
Follow the prompts — contacts, photos, and calendar typically transfer; some iPhone-specific data (like iMessages) won't carry over.
Motorola
Motorola's Migrate app transfers data from an old phone — Android or iPhone — to a new Motorola phone.
During setup on the new Motorola phone, choose to migrate data when prompted, or open the Migrate app afterward.
On the old phone, install the Migrate app if prompted (Android) or follow the on-screen instructions for iPhone.
Connect the two phones as instructed (usually over Wi‑Fi) and choose what to transfer — contacts, photos, messages, and apps.
Keep both phones nearby and on power until the transfer finishes — this can take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours depending on how much data you're moving.
Note: Migrate is a one-time transfer tool, not ongoing backup — see Backing Up My Device — Motorola for that.
LG
LG exited the mobile phone business in 2021, so its own transfer tools are no longer reliably available. The most consistent option is Google's built-in transfer, which works whether you're moving data from an old LG phone or to a new LG phone.
Moving to a New Phone
During setup on the new phone, choose to copy apps and data from your old device when prompted.
Connect the two phones as instructed (cable or Wi‑Fi) and select what to transfer.
If a direct connection isn't offered, sign into your Google account on the new phone and restore from your Google backup instead — see Backing Up My Device — LG.
