Software Update Stuck or Failing

Written by Seth Smith

Updates keep your phone secure and running smoothly, but they can occasionally stall or fail partway through. Find your device below for update steps and fixes if it gets stuck.

Apple (iPhone)

Checking for and Installing Updates

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

  2. Connect to Wi‑Fi and plug the phone into power — large updates can fail or stall on cellular data or low battery.

  3. Tap Download and Install.

Update Stuck or Failing

  • Not enough storage: check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and free up space — updates typically need several GB free temporarily.

  • Stuck on the Apple logo or a progress bar for a long time: let it sit for at least 30–60 minutes before intervening; large updates can genuinely take a while.

  • Still stuck after that: force restart the iPhone (the exact button combination varies by model), then try the update again.

  • Repeated failures: connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC and update through Finder or iTunes instead, which can succeed where an over-the-air update fails.

Update Stuck or Failing

  • Not enough storage: check Settings > Battery and device care > Storage and free up space.

  • Stuck on the boot screen or a progress bar for a long time: let it sit for at least 30–60 minutes before intervening; large updates can genuinely take a while.

  • Still stuck after that: force restart the phone (usually holding the power and volume-down buttons together for 10+ seconds), then try again.

  • Repeated failures: use Smart Switch on a computer to run an emergency software recovery as a last resort — this reinstalls the operating system.

LG

LG exited the mobile phone business in 2021, so older LG models may no longer receive new software updates at all — if Settings > System > System update (or About phone > Update center on older models) shows no update available, that may simply be the last version your device will get rather than a stuck update.

If an Update Is Available but Failing
